Five-Minute Printable Gift Tags

You will finish this with six blank gift tags, cut, punched, and ready to tie onto a parcel. Five minutes if the printer cooperates. Ten if it does not.

These are deliberately plain. No borders to fight with, no ink-heavy blocks. Write on them, stamp them, or leave them bare — a bare tag on brown paper looks better than most things you can buy.

What you need

• The PDF, printed one-sided
• Card stock if you have it, plain paper if you do not (both work)
• Scissors, or a craft knife and a ruler
• A single hole punch
• Twine, ribbon, or string — about 20cm per tag

That is the whole list. The hole punch is the only fussy item, and a sharp pencil pushed through onto a cork mat will do in a pinch.

Steps

1. Open the PDF and check the page size first. There is a Letter page and an A4 page. Print only the one that matches your paper, or you will get a scaled sheet with a crooked hole placement.

2. Set your printer to Actual Size, not Fit to Page. This is the gotcha that bites everyone. Fit to Page shrinks the sheet a few percent, the dashed lines drift, and six tags stop being six matching tags. Look for "100%" or "Actual size" in the print dialog.

3. Print one test sheet on plain paper. Hold it up to the light against your card stock. If the tags sit centred and the dashed lines are crisp, load the good paper.

4. Cut along the dashed lines. Six tags come off one sheet. Scissors are fine — the lines are straight and generously spaced. If you are using a craft knife, cut the long lines first, then the short ones, so the sheet stays rigid while you work.

5. Punch the hole at the marked dot. Each tag has a small printed dot near the top edge. Line the punch up so the dot sits in the middle of the punch window, not at its edge. Punch through, then check the paper bridge above the hole — you want at least 3mm of card there or the tag tears the first time someone pulls the string.

6. Thread the twine. Fold a 20cm length in half, push the folded loop through the hole, then pass the two loose ends through the loop and pull snug. That is a lark's head knot, and it holds better than a plain knot on card.

7. Write the name last. Ink on card stock takes a moment to dry, and a tag you have already tied is easier to hold steady than a loose one.

If the hole tears

Card stock under about 160gsm can split at the punch. Two fixes, both quick. Punch the hole slightly lower so there is more paper above it, or fold the top 5mm of the tag back on itself and punch through both layers — a doubled edge will not tear.

One variation

Punch the hole and then snip the two top corners off at 45 degrees. You get the classic pointed luggage-tag shape in two cuts, and it reads as considerably more deliberate than the rectangle. Do the corners after punching, not before, or you will lose your alignment dot.
